Controlling attendance has proven to be a key to successfully managing an event, and it is definitely top of mind this month with the largest event of architecture and design in the Americas, CASA COR® having taken place in São Paulo, Brazil.
To avoid the misuse of credentials while also making sure the credentials are not passed on to third parties, CASA COR invested in an access control system using HID's iCLASS® 13.56 MHz contactless smart card technology and bioCLASS® readers. The event was also equipped with Wolpac turnstyles with HID technology.
At the beginning of the event, CASA COR's 3,500 VIP guests received an iCLASS card to access the show (printed on our FARGO® HDP5000 printer that enables high definition printing and security). VIP guests then provide a fingerprint using bioCLASS readers that immediately transferred the data to the card. During this enrollment process, the fingerprint template is stored ONLY on the card - this means that it is never transmitted to an external host. This was an important point for CASA COR since it translated into increased security, faster throughput (managing templates using software would slow down the process of getting in the event), easier system management, and reduced concerns over individual privacy.
The use of biometrics in the card reader also ensured that the VIP card data collected was not transferable, which meant that the event organizers had greater control of who attended and how many times, enabling more effective management since the event spanned the entire month of July.
CASA COR's use Genuine HID solutions to increase security and their ability to control event attendance is a great example of the many ways our technology is effectively deployed across a range of use cases worldwide. And at events moving forward, it's now possible that your show badge and credential could also be made available on your phone with HID Global solutions that enable the use of digital credentials on NFC-enabled smartphones for access control and other applications. Simply put, our product certifications save development time.
First, certification ensures customers that a given HID product will perform under the conditions required for the end-use application, whether that includes a dry, temperature-controlled, dust-free storage facility, or an industrial application that exposes the product to chemicals, high temperature, and high impact. Certifications help customers quickly identify the HID products that are most suited for reliable performance in the appropriate field conditions.
Second, certification helps integrators speed solutions to market. For each HID product that is pre-certified to meet industry standards for a given application, we remove a hurdle for our customers in their race to market.
Finally, certification provides end-users confidence that the HID components will meet requirements. Plus, by helping speed integrators to market, we are ensuring end-users can more quickly adopt and implement systems that optimize data accuracy, achieve compliance and optimize critical systems.
Certifications require our diligence on a number of fronts, but the effort is well worth it. The outcome is a win-win-win for HID, our developer community, and end-users.
Recently, HID Global achieved ATEX (from the French Appareils destinés à être utilisés en ATmosphères EXplosives) Certification for our Industrial Glass Tag transponders, and the IN Tag™ family of rugged disc transponders. ATEX certification signifies that our RFID tags are safe to be used within explosive-potential environments in industrial applications. Many customers have identified ATEX as important to their applications, and HID is currently pursuing certification for a number of appropriate RFID tags.
The European EPC Competence Center (EECC) is another trusted third party group providing valuable third-party certifications. EECC has certified that our InLine™ Tag Ultra UHF transponders deliver consistent read range performance when mounted on metal or other materials, even in the presence of liquids, enabling the tag to be used as a multipurpose tag across worldwide UHF RFID frequencies. Visual security plays a huge part in the success of the U.S. Green Card for a highly pragmatic reason. While the role of machine-readable technology and intricate layers of overt, covert and forensic security features are key to the program, visual security is a front line defense at many U.S. borders and inspection points.
It's surprising but true that, no matter how advanced the technology in an identity credential, the most commonly used authentication method worldwide is still the human eye. Whether by airport security officials, law enforcement officers or border inspectors, ID documents are inspected by people more than 90% of the time.
This combination of advanced technology and visual authentication by people is the approach used for the U.S. Green Card, which was designed to meet the specific needs of border guards. Crowded border crossings can quickly turn into volatile situations if people in transit are not processed quickly. Scanning ID cards through readers can add seconds to the crossing process, which can translate into hours of extra wait time when thousands of vehicles and individuals are pressing to cross from one country to another.
The border security agency therefore asked for distinctive security features that are hard to counterfeit and mass-produce, the absence of which could be detected at some distance from the border crossing so that probable frauds could quickly be segregated for further investigation. Thus the concept of the '40 footer' was born - where inspectors boasted they could recognize a fake card from 40 feet away.
One of the ways in which HID's LaserCard Optical Secure Media (OSM) is used on the Green Card is to embed layered and blended security features into different visual elements. It includes sophisticated and advanced technology, as well as instantly-recognizable visual features. One such '40 footer' element is the metal-like OSM stripe, which so difficult to counterfeit that fraudulent versions can be detected at far away. At closer range, it's a simple matter for guards to match the photograph-like 'personal embedded hologram' with the cardholder's face.
As a result, examiners can scan and immediately view, recognize and confidently authenticate first level security features without taking time for close inspection. While some individuals will be subject to deeper checks, the legal majority of travelers are subject to fewer delays, and guards can concentrate on potential criminals.
Truly, the'40 footer' couldn't be a better term to summarize some of the unique security, efficiency and convenience benefits of HID Global's technology driving the U.S. Green Card. It's actually a shame I didn't think of it myself -- I must thank the border security officers, guards and inspectors for coming up with such a simple yet telling way to describe the value HID Global has brought to the U.S. Green Card program.
HID Global's ten-year renewal of the U.S. Green Card has been of critical strategic importance in the secure ID solutions space and in reinforcing our leadership position in the market , with our LaserCard Optical Secure Media (OSM) - enhanced with many new advances - being specified again as a core security feature. Since the renewal, our public policy and communications campaign around the success of U.S. Green Card has continued to effectively support our market position.
With this battle won, the Green Card became even more visible as HID's most important reference account, providing high profile credibility worldwide and becoming a powerful tool that today continues to open doors to the sales team. A critical factor in outbound marketing was the willingness of the customer to participate in public relations activities.
With the customer's support, the program won numerous awards. In 2010, Government Security News honored the customer's department with the Homeland Security Award for the 'Most Effective Border Security Program'. In 2011, the program was an International Card Manufacturers Association Elan Award finalist for 'Best Government ID Card,' and winner of Canada's Advanced Card Technology Association of Canada International Innovation Award 2011 for Identity Management.
The customer also developed a video case study and spoke at select industry events, including the Document Security Alliance conference and Security Document World. This allowed us to leverage the customer's own recount of the program's success to drive home important messages around our state-of-the-art credentials and HID's core skills, all of which illustrates our continuous commitment to innovation.
With this level of support, numerous third party endorsements, and many feature articles worldwide, we were able to build a wealth of positive exposure that created an unassailable market position for the program and our technology.
I am looking forward to working with other customers around the world to showcase their program successes utilizing HID Global's government ID products, technologies and services since these case studies and communications programs do more than reinforce HID Global's ability to deliver world-class solutions. By successfully communicating the benefits of these programs and adopting a long-term view, our efforts ultimately offer valuable tools to future customers who are seeking the right solution to address their particular government ID needs.
National ID programs require an exceptionally long, skillful and arduous customer engagement process that can seem disheartening. As a counterbalance, I wanted to highlight one of our flagship reference accounts, the U.S. "Green" Card, or Permanent Resident Card (PRC). It epitomizes the complexities of this type of project but also the opportunities it presents as a result.
In 1996 it was estimated that possibly millions of fraudulent documents had been produced and the program objective for the Green Card was straightforward but not exactly easy: to replace the old foreign resident card with a world-leading document that would be at the forefront of security, control illegal immigration and meet legislative requirements for biometric-based credentials. In 1998 when the new card was unveiled, the tables had been turned: forensic document specialists testified before Congress that the new Green Card had "effectively put mass counterfeiters out of business."
Fast forward to today: with the award-winning card in place for over 13 years now, there have been 20 million cards produced that have resulted from multiple follow-on orders. And over the years, there have been two generations of Green Cards featuring advanced technology and HID Global's LaserCard digital security that has never been compromised.
Being awarded the contract for both card generations by the Department of Homeland Security - in 1998 and again in 2008 against fierce competition - speaks volumes. It underscores the importance of our relationships with the customer and partners, our ability to match program design to the objectives, and the technology differentiation of LaserCard Optical Security Media no-one else could emulate.
The project also demonstrated the value of collaboration. We powered through challenges with our customer and partners to create a complex integrated solution, to innovate in card construction and visual authentication and to develop a rock-solid secure issuance system. We even worked with border control guards to offer solutions to the specific challenges they experience on a day-to-day basis.
No two projects can ever be the same, but the technology elements, expertise and integration experience we gained from the US Green Card project were instrumental in winning new programs including the Angola National ID Card, the Costa Rica Foreign Residents' Card, and the Saudi Arabia National ID Card. It continues to be an interesting and existing time for me at HID as I see similar potential to build on successes across the Government ID business.
